For the longest time I've been thinking of drastically reducing my reliance on Big Tech. The lack of respect for privacy, ever-encroaching enshittification and the constant need to alter the deal has put me off entrusting my entire life to them.

I made the mistake of logging into Facebook the other day.

My Unraid home server has, for the longest time, been a hodge-podge of old hard drives that I've combined to make my array. I started off with a 1TB, 2TB and 4TB drive in the array, salvaged from old PCs and consoles and put to work storing my data.

Tech companies have always been on normal one, but in the last decade or so they've been on an especially normal one.
I remember when I bought an email app for my various Apple devices. I think I paid about £5 for the iOS version, and then £20 for the Mac version. I might be wrong because I can't find any invoices or receipts going back that far, but the point still stands: I paid something for it.
